22nd District candidates differ on gas drilling

BINGHAMTON – Dan Lamb, the Democratic candidate for the U.S. 22nd Congressional District, spoke out against drilling for shale gas yesterday at a gathering in Binghamton. He was joined by Binghamton Mayor Matt Ryan, Cornell University Ecology Professor Robert Howarth, and President of Toxics Targeting Walter Hang.
Lamb called for more safeguards and studies on health, the environment and economic impacts before Governor Andrew Cuomo announces any decision to lift the four-year statewide moratorium, something that is widely anticipated in the coming weeks.
“We will not allow you to pollute our air, poison our water, scar our landscape for short-term profits and for jobs for out of state workers. We’re not going to do that,” said Lamb. “I believe fundamentally it would be reckless and catastrophic to advance this industry prior to restoring critical environmental safeguards, completing the honest research needed to prove this industry is indeed safe.”
Reports have said the Cuomo administration may allow fracking in the five counties that border Pennsylvania’s Northern Tier.
The incumbent, U.S. Rep. Richard Hanna, has consistently supported safe horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing for New York’s Marcellus Shale reserves and said the Governor’s decision to access the energy source should be made neither based on politics nor emotion, but rather the facts.
“Because it is relatively clean, affordable and abundant, natural gas is helping move us toward American energy independence. And energy independence is key to our national security. It also has the potential to diversify our region’s economy, create energy, manufacturing and infrastructure jobs, and raise revenue for local governments.
“If done in New York, the state’s process should be transparent and include appropriate regulations such as chemical disclosure that make the most sense for our unique region. As President Obama has stated, it is imperative that we develop our natural gas resources safely, and I am hopeful that Governor Cuomo’s decision will meet that standard,” he said.=
