22nd District candidates differ on gas drilling

BINGHAMTON – Dan Lamb, the Democratic candidate for the U.S. 22nd Congressional District, spoke out against drilling for shale gas yesterday at a gathering in Binghamton. He was joined by Binghamton Mayor Matt Ryan, Cornell University Ecology Professor Robert Howarth, and President of Toxics Targeting Walter Hang.

Lamb called for more safeguards and studies on health, the environment and economic impacts before Governor Andrew Cuomo announces any decision to lift the four-year statewide moratorium, something that is widely anticipated in the coming weeks.

“We will not allow you to pollute our air, poison our water, scar our landscape for short-term profits and for jobs for out of state workers. We’re not going to do that,” said Lamb. “I believe fundamentally it would be reckless and catastrophic to advance this industry prior to restoring critical environmental safeguards, completing the honest research needed to prove this industry is indeed safe.”
