Bonney, Murray bring home medals from state track and field meet
MIDDLETOWN – Norwich juniors Brooke Bonney and Matt Murray medaled in their events at the New York State Track and Field Championships, Saturday at Middletown High School.
Despite earning a spot on the podium among the best in their respective events, the duo, said NHS coach Shaun Horan, is already planning to get back to work.
"They both had good performances and are definitely happy to medal, but I think they both are not satisfied and want to continue to build on this year," Horan said.
Bonney was fifth in division two in the discus with a toss of 113 feet, five inches, and she matched her sixth-place finish of a year ago in the shot put recording a throw of 36 feet, 7 1/4 inches.
"All of Friday's events were cancelled (due to weather), and I think Brooke was a little discouraged and not as pumped (up) as she normally is," Horan said. "But two medals at the state meet? That is a nice accomplishment. She's getting better and better, and I know she won't stop working. She already has big plans this summer for lifting and speed work. She definitely has the right attitude."
Murray's 800-meter race was also postponed and moved to Saturday. In fact, the entire state meet was completed in one day. In his only event, Murray found himself boxed in during the opening lap, and his 58-second 400-meter split was slower than his norm. Over the last 250 meters, Murray made a big move from near the back of the back to place fifth in division two and sixth overall in a new school-record time of 1:53.59.
"Matt just had to fight to improve his position in the second lap," Horan said. "If he didn't get boxed in that first lap, I think he probably would have run in the 1:52 range. But you can't complain, it was great competition, and it was his best time."
Also placing locally was B-G/Afton sophomore Julia Knapp. In her fourth state meet appearance, Knapp broke her own school record in the 100-meter hurdles timing 15.14 to place fifth in division two.
