NORWICH – In its next-to-last regular season meet of the season, Norwich won 11 of 12 events against local rival Greene, and improved its record to 8-1 on the season Tuesday at Norwich High School.
Despite logging heavy yardage in practice, the Tornado still mustered nine personal-best times, led by Killian Benedict’s season-low 52.91 seconds to win the 100 freestyle. Joe Stagliano (200 free, 100 breaststroke), Curtis Woodard (200 IM), Greg Todd (50 free, 100 fly)), Ricky Finnegan (diving), Nick Mooney (500 free), and Jon Manwarren (100 backstroke) also entered the victory column in individual events.
“We didn’t have any type of letdown, and that was something I was worried about,” said Norwich coach Kevin Diefenbacher. “Our guys have had some really good times this year, and we can compete with the big boys. Thursday’s meet should be a good one.”
Norwich hosts Holland Patent Thursday at 5:30 p.m.. Before the meet, the Tornado will recognize its senior swimmers.

GREENE – Greene won back-to-back games for the second time this season, and did so on consecutive nights topping Delhi Tuesday.
One night after beating Deposit by 28, the Trojans (6-8) were on the verge of an upset loss scoring just 11 points through three quarters to trail the Bulldogs by nine.
Eighth-grader Maddie Brink started the Greene comeback with a pair of buckets, Katie Carey had a three-point play, and Lindsey Brown’s three-point play snapped a 20-20 tie. The go-ahead hoop started on a Sierra Stoppkotte rebound and pass to Jessica David. David hit Brown with a bounce bass that led to the layup.
“It was nice to see our eighth-grader start the rally, and the seniors finish it,” said Greene coach Dave Gorton. “The fourth quarter was just fantastic. We were more aggressive on defense, and we passed the ball so well in transition.”
David had 10 points to lead Greene, three of those coming on a running three-pointer just before the halftime buzzer.
Greene had a season-high 17 assists against Deposit, and outscored the Lumberjacks 34-12 over the final two quarters. “I was really pleased with how we shared the ball, especially in the second half,” Gorton said, who noted his team had 12 assists and just two turnovers over the final 16 minutes.
David led with 15 points, and Katie Carey added nine points, six rebounds, six steals, three blocked shots, and five assists.
Greene plays at Oxford Thursday.
