Sidney victorious as the Warrior, Blackhawk rivalry rages into sectionals

Sidney 7, Oxford 2
The Sidney Warriors defeated the Oxford Blackhawks 7-2 in Tuesday’s Section IV Class C playoff.
Bill Kozak went 2-3 with a run scored and two RBI.
He drew a walk in the first, singled in the third, flew out in the fourth and hit a towering, two RBI triple to right center in the sixth.
Kozak was Sidney’s starting pitcher as well. He allowed two runs in six innings of work. He struck out five, walked two and surrendered just four hits.
“Billy pitched very well, he worked fast and threw strikes,” said Sidney varsity baseball head coach Kyle Vibbard, “He’s been coming through in the clutch his whole career.”
Kevin Davis was the game’s losing pitcher. He lasted five innings, walked three, struck out three and allowed three earned runs on seven hits.
“We were mixing in a few more change-ups and curve balls than we usually do,” said Oxford varsity baseball head coach Chris Palmer, “There’s not an easy out in their lineup. There is no place where you’re going to throw nine fastballs and get through the inning. That’s not how you approach this team.”
The top of the first saw Oxford take an early lead, 2-0. An Anthony Ruling error put Cameron Heggie on base.
Heggie moved to second on a Jeff Lawton slow roller to second base.
With one out Matt Moore hit the baseball to right field, moving Heggie to third.
With two on and two out, Kevin Davis smashed the ball between the shortstop and third baseman for a two RBI double that scored Heggie and Moore.
“You feel good being up two,” Palmer said, “(but) it’ going to be a battle against (Sidney.) They have good hitters up and down the lineup and they don’t make mistakes in the field.”
Davis went 2-2 with the two RBI and a walk.
“It was a good start,” Palmer said,” If I could draw it up we would jump right on them just like we did... We just have to continue to push runs across.”
In the bottom of the second inning Sidney would battle back.
Jon Gorshack started the inning with a standup double that was ripped to the left field wall.
Noah McKee followed with a bouncing liner down the left field line for a basehit that drove in Gorshack.
Anthony Ruling walked during an at bat that had two unsuccessful pick-off attempts to first base.
Kyle McMillan advanced the runners into scoring position with a bunt.
Sidney catcher Patrick Vibbard then drove a high fly ball to right field, a sacrifice fly with one out, scoring McKee and tying the game at two.
With Kevin Davis still on the mound in the bottom of the fourth, Sidney’s Noah McKee ripped a 2-1 fastball just in front of Oxford’s left fielder for a basehit.
Anthony Ruling took a 1-2 pitch for a ride along the third base line for a sneaky single.
Davis was called for a balk during Kyle McMillan’s at bat when he “pulled his hands apart before he stepped off.”
“We’re not looking forward to facing Kevin Davis for the next two years,” Vibbard said, “ He’s getting bigger and throwing harder.”
With runners on second and third and no outs McMilllan smoked a liner that bounced past the pitcher’s glove, over second base and into centerfield, scoring Noah McKee from third.
The score was 3-2 in favor of Sidney when the Warriors Alex Hoskins hit a one strike fastball to second base that scored Ruling from third and gave them a two run lead.
Ruling went 1-2 with a run scored and a walk.
The Warriors stacked up insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth with Cameron Heggie in relief for Davis.
Down to their final out of the inning, Sidney’s Patrick Vibbard hit the ball hard past third base for a basehit.
Alex Hoskins then dropped a base hit into right field, moving Vibbard to third base.
Justin Charles pinch ran for Hoskins.
“We wanted speed on the bases,” Vibbard said, “ We have 15 players on our bench and everyone contributes in some way.”
Kozak contributed in a big way in the sixth, smashing a towering triple to right center, scoring Vibbard and the speedy Charles from first.
With the Midstate Athletic Conference’s Most Valuable Player standing on third, Brandon Bessett drew a walk. Zak Green then hit a two on, two out line drive up the middle, advancing Bessett to third and scoring Kozak form third.
“It’s tough to beat a good team three times in a year,” Vibbard said, “ They played us tough in the MAC Semi-finals.”
“We’re not going to lay down,” he said, “We have a team of battlers that want to move on and are going to do what they can to win a Sectional Championship.”
