Norwich swimmers win second straight meet

Girls’ Swimming

Norwich 101, Windsor 75
NORWICH – Despite its small lineup, Norwich still had too much depth for Windsor in winning its second meet of the week Friday night.
Norwich’s Maya Blaisure, and Danika Tworkowsky garnered early wins in the 200 IM and 50 free, and NHS diver Stephanie Meyer improved by over 40 points from earlier in the week scoring 151.50 to capture the diving.
Windsor won three events, but was typically outgunned for two of the top three spots. Blaisure’s win in the medley headed up a 1-2-3 finish, said Norwich head coach Kevin Diefenbacher. “Windsor has some up-and-coming young kids, we just have too much for them right now,” the coach said.
Nearly a year ago to the day, Norwich faced Windsor in a dual meet, and Diefenbacher said the girls returning from that team are already ahead of last year’s pace. “We’re right there and where we want them to be (with their times),” Diefenbacher said.
Tworkowsky and Blaisure had two individual-event wins and four overall, while Lauren Llewellyn won one event and teamed on two of the three victorious relays.

Girls’ Soccer

Norwich 2, Greene 0
GREENE – Norwich snapped 200-plus minutes of scoreless play when Alyssa Welch scored early in the second half. Welch’s tally buoyed the Tornado, who picked up their first win of the season Saturday in the consolation game of the Greene Tournament.
“I think we all breathed a sigh of relief after the first goal, and we felt a weight was lifted off our shoulders,” said Norwich coach Adam Sprague.
Welch picked up a ball that squirted through into the 18-yard box, and she hit a left-footed shot over the keeper. With 10 minutes left, Savannah Williams sent a pass to Welch on the left side, who hit another left-footed curler just inside the right post. “That was a nice play, and their keeper had no chance to make the save,” Sprague said.
Norwich keeper Kassidy Seary finished with her first career shutout. She and Welch were each named all-tournament selections. “The defense definitely played a great game, and I’m proud of the way we played,” Sprague said.
