Runaway truck rolls into Chenango River
OXFORD – Tuesday, a motor vehicle rolled from a gas station parking lot and traveled unoccupied to the Chenango River where it became completely submerged.
The Village of Oxford Police Department responded to a report of an alleged stolen motor vehicle at the BlueOx located on North Canal Street in the Village of Oxford on Tuesday.
According to police, the operator of the vehicle – a red Ford Ranger – parked his truck in the BlueOx parking lot then went into the store. When the man returned, the vehicle was no longer there, and police said the driver thought the vehicle had been stolen.
"However, the Oxford Police responded to find that the vehicle had been left in gear while in the BlueOx parking lot, and rolled down an embankment leading to the river," said Oxford Police Chief Richard Nolan. "The vehicle became completely submerged and traveled approximately 123.7 feet following the river current."
Menard's Wrecking Service of Oxford was dispatched to the scene and stood by for a dive team to arrive to attach the truck to their apparatus.
Greene Fire Department’s Special Operations Unit arrived on scene and began the vehicle extrication process with assistance from the Oxford Fire Department. Nolan said A New York State Police dive team also responded to the scene.
The extrication process of the truck lasted four hours and the OPD assisted in providing crowd and traffic control throughout the duration of the extrication.
