New coach hopes to spark Greene softball
GREENE – With Spring Sports practices in full swing in Chenango County, the Greene varsity softball team finds itself with a new head coach for the 2016 season.
Rick Condon, although new to the head coaching job in Greene, is not new to the softball community and has set some lofty but attainable goals for the Lady Trojans, after they posted a 7-9 overall record in last years 2015 campaign.
“I have a to-do list for Greene softball which includes age groups from elementary school to high school. The end goal is to bring Greene softball back to the top and to remain there as a constant contender for years to come. It will be a slow process but will be a goal that myself, the players and community can obtain,” said Condon.
The Lady Trojans will first take the field on April 2, at 11 a.m. When they travel to take on Delhi.
“The players are extremely excited to get started and have be working very hard to make a statement this season,” Condon said. “We are looking to be in sectionals this season.”
As a new coach has to become acclimated to their team much like the players may have to adjust as well, Condon shared his excitement as to the talent level and enthusiasm that he will be coaching this year.
“Being new to the program I see great things for absolutely every player on the varsity squad,” said Condon. “a stand out player right at this moment would have to be Maddie Brink. This young lady has been doing all the right things for years to make herself a stand out player. She plays softball 11 out of 12 months a year and that’s a recipe for success.”
Further, Condon noted that an up and coming player who he has noticed, and is very excited to have on his squad is McKenna Sergi.
“All I can say about this young lady is, write that name down! McKenna is a player that any coach in New York State would gladly take on their team, she has speed, an arm, can hit and a determined focus,” said Condon.
Condon further explained that when he addressed the team for the first time as their new varsity head coach, he was excited to see such enthusiasm.
“We spoke openly and all agreed that the team goal was to reach sectional play, I believe that could happen. These young ladies are as amped as I have ever seen a team, and I’ve been around the softball community for years,” explained Condon. “I’m certain they will make me proud and amaze themselves, while even having a little fun at the same time. Attitude is a little thing that makes a big difference between softball success and softball failure,” shared Condon.
