Oxford Chief calls for community to do more
OXFORD – Martin A. Logsdon Jr., 26, of Norwich, was arrested by the village of Oxford Police Department on June 10. Logsdon was charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance in the seventh degree, a class A misdemeanor; and criminal possession of a hypodermic instrument, also a class A misdemeanor.
The arrest followed an investigation by Officer Steve Rounds into a complaint reported in the village of Oxford, resulting in the discovery of 19 bags of heroin, 32 separate glassine envelopes, and a hypodermic needle. The vehicle that Logsdon was a passenger in was stopped due to the subject allegedly becoming involved in an altercation with an older female in the vehicle, an instance reported by a complainant. Logsdon was arraigned before the village Court and remained to the Chenango County Correctional Facility in lieu of $2,000 cash bail or $5,000 property bond. Additional charges are pending upon further investigation.
Oxford Police Chief Richard Nolan described how drug arrests like this are on the rise, and stated that, as a community, we must do more to curb this worrying trend. "We face an epidemic and public health crisis in our local community. In the past several months we have located more than a dozen needles and stamped heroin packages on our streets. Property related crime related to drug addiction has increased substantially, with our agency handling 18 vehicle larcenies in a single night,” he said. “We've responded to multiple heroin overdoses. We've referred 12 individuals for addiction treatment. We must do more as a community to make our community safer and assist those suffering from addiction and our agency is proactively pursuing criminal investigations of those who decide to sell dangerous drugs and innovative programs to assist those suffering from addiction."
