Trojans claim division title against Bainbridge-Guilford
BAINBRIDGE – The Greene varsity boys soccer team continues to roll in 2016, adding a divisional title to its accomplishments on the year when they defeated Bainbridge-Guilford this past Friday.
The matchup featured two of Chenango Counties premier soccer squads on a Friday night showdown with the division championship on the line.
The Trojans took the early lead at the half with a 1-0 lead, tacking on one more goal for comfort in the second half to put the game away for the win. Scoring for Greene was senior Kevin Halsteter, and junior Bobby Mills, with assists coming from freshman Alec Frair, and sophomore Spencer Klumpp.
The championship caliber matchup featured a Greene team who notched seven shots on goal and five corners, while B-G recorded five shots on goal and no corners.
In the loss for the Bobcats, their keeper Sean Jones managed a seven save game, while Greene's goalkeeper Ryan Lohsen grabbed five.
With the win over B-G, the divisional championship in 2016 marks the second straight year for Greene claiming the crown. The Trojans will now face a familiar foe in Delhi, as they will play at home on Thursday, Oct. 13. Notably Greene defeated Delhi 2-0 in 2015, as they prepare for a rematch as they now go for their second straight MAC league championship.
“As a young team, the experience of winning the division against a solid team like B-G is huge,” said Greene head coach Rick Tallman.
In the loss Bainbridge-Guilford will also play next on Thursday, Oct. 11, for the third and fourth place spot in the MAC league crossover tournament, where they will face Walton at home.
“Delhi has an experienced strong team, and we will have to play at the peak of our ability,” said coach Tallman. “We look forward to the challenge.”
