NORWICH – This Sunday, November 19, locals will see people from near and far take to the streets of Norwich for the 36th annual Norwich Family YMCA Turkey Trot.
Over the last several years, the number of participants has averaged around 600-650 racers in the 5k run/walk. Last year’s race was an exception as the weather interfered, but the YMCA still had 397 participate.
But the annual race has become more than just a race; it’s a holiday tradition.
“Besides supporting the Norwich YMCA fundraising efforts, the 36th Annual Norwich Family YMCA Turkey Trot has created a community tradition around running, health and wellness, family, and bringing the community together to support a wonderful cause and the work of the Norwich YMCA,” said Jamey Mullen, the Norwich YMCA Executive Director.
For 36 years, the race has been a feature fundraising event for the YMCA on the Sunday before Thanksgiving.
“It’s a holiday tradition for everyone local,” said Tyler Oliver, Associate Executive Director of the Norwich YMCA. “I always remember the Turkey Trot being around. Everyone starts to come into town for Thanksgiving and this is something that brings the family downtown, whether they participate or cheer on the people who are racing.”
Participants of all ages register for the 5k run/walk. Last year, the youngest racer was the age of four, and the oldest was 85.
The YMCA recently added a free half-mile race for kids. This yea the race will start at noon, and children are asked to arrive at 11:45 a.m. in front of the Y.
A few of the local companies such as GE, Kerry Bio Science and Chobani, are sending down teams that have signed up this year, promoting health living for the employees.
The 5k race will start at 12:30 p.m. All racers need to be registered in order to participate. Registration for the race starts at 10 a.m.
All participating Trotters will receive a slew of freebies with food items, drinks, Chobani Yogurt, and the long sleeve shirts that most look forward to. Each participant has a chance to win their age division, which results in the prize of the infamous “Turkey Trophy,” and a $100 gift card from Olympia Sports.
Divisions are 11-and-under, 12-15, 16-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69, 70-79, and 80-and-over are for both men and women, with one men’s overall winner and one women’s overall winner awarded.
Last year, John Mooney of Norwich (17:19.85) and Katie Nolan of Bainbridge (19:21.81) became back-to-back overall winners.
The race will be held regardless of weather conditions. Currently, the forecast looks to be around 40-degrees and cloudy, which seem to be a runner’s dream conditions for a 5k.
You can register for the event the day of for a price of $30. If you sign up prior to race day, the fee is $25. Any students looking to race in grades 12-and-under will have an entry fee of $20.
