Norwich boys bowling nearly breaks school series record; Hancock sweep in both boys and girls matches
NORWICH – The Purple Tornado boys Bowling team erupted Wednesday, taking down the Windsor Black Knights 5-0 and nearly broke the school’s scratch series record. The team finished with 3211 total pins on the day, 734 better than their opponent. The Lady Black Knights captured the win over the host team, taking all points in the match.
Norwich had four of their top five bowlers pick up series score over 600 with one coming 15 pins away from a 700. Nick Deady of the Tornado rolled a 256 in his first game of the afternoon and recorded 200-plus scores in the other two to finish with a match-best 685.
Kai Scheer, who bowled the best score in the second game, finished with the next best score for Norwich with a 676. Teammate Cameron Birtch scored a 237, 215, 205 for his single game scores, adding up to a series score of 675.
The Tornado’s Griffen Clipston grab best game honors in the final game of the day and rolled a 627 while Scott Manwarren finished the day with a 566, bowling a 214 in game two.
Windsor was led by Andy Barton’s 589 series score, bowling a team-best 213 single game.
The girls match saw the Black Knights’ Linsey Anders bowl a match-best 329 series, bowling all three games as the highest single score in each.
Norwich’s Lexi Taylor rolled a team-high 504 total in the three games, bowling a 203 in the third. Gabby Warren finished the afternoon with the next best score of 481.
Morgan Conkling and Macauley Brown of the Lady Tornado both bowled series scores over 400. Conkling rolled a 428 while Brown finished with a 405. Marleigha Clipston rounded out Norwich’s top five on the girls side, ending the match with a 394.
The Purple Tornado are off until late next week, where they will host a tournament on December 27. Tournament play is scheduled to start at 10 a.m. on Thursday.
Hancock sweep in both boys and girls matches
NORWICH – The Oxford Blackhawks faced a powerhouse bowling team on the lanes Wednesday afternoon, hosting Hancock. Both the boys and girls teams for Hancock swept all points in the match.
Brenna Gleim of the visiting team bowled a game that was nothing out of the ordinary for her according to Blackhawks head coach Lance Thorne. Gleim struck the first eight frames to begin the match, and followed up in the second game with strikes in the first five. “She is just an outstanding bowler,” said Thorne.
Gleim recorded a series score of 701 and finished her first game with a 268.
Oxford’s Erin Howard bowled her second consecutive 600 series, ending the afternoon with a team-best 602 that included a first game 232, a single high score by the Lady Blackhawks for the match.
Bowling a career-high series score of 599 in the match was Oxford’s Megan Smith. Smith’s first game score was a 210 and nearly added a second 200-plus game in the third with her 190.
The Blackhawks’ Catherine Northuo finished the day with a 357 for her three game total while Cat Maynard rolled a 278 and Madison Behr ended with a 252.
On the boys end, Hancock’s eighth-grader Anton Leonard is a sensation in the MAC conference for bowling. He rolled a match-best 649, which included a clean third game to cap it off his afternoon.
“[Anton Leonard] throws one of the best looking balls in the MAC,” said Thorne. “It’s hard to believe he’s only in eighth grade.
Oxford had just two team members bowl in the match. Matt Cole bowled a 182 in the first game and scored a team-best 365 series. Brother Joe Cole bowled a 283 for the match.
The Blackhawks next match is at 3:45 p.m. on Friday as they travel down Route 12 to take on the Greene Trojans.
