Four seeking Norwich mayor post to speak at forum
NORWICH – There are likely four candidates running for Norwich City mayor. In June voters will select a Republican candidate for the city.
The winner will represent the Republican Party in the General Election in November.
Prior to the election though there will be a meet the candidates forum, Monday June 3, at the Bohemian Moon with all the candidates. The event will begin at about 6:30 p.m.
Chenango Links representative, Karol Kucinski, who is helping to organize the forum, said all candidates running for City of Norwich mayor's office will be at the event. Chenango Links is a community group that promotes local involvement.
He said incumbent, Christine A. Carnrike, along with candidates, Shawn C. Sastri, Jill Osterhout-Kraft and Joseph P. Maiurano will speak at the event. Kraft is running as a Democrat, Maiurano is running as an independent, Carnrike and Sastri are facing each other in the Republican primary June 25.
Republican Commissioner Mary Lou Monahan said the primary will be noon to 9 p.m., June 25. She said primaries would be held in the City of Norwich and the towns of McDonough, North Norwich, Smithville and Smyrna. Polling locations will be the same as last election and information about it can be found at www.co.chenango.ny.us/elections.
The Chenango County Board of Elections is having a recruitment drive to expand the poll worker pool to assist in conducting primary and general elections throughout Chenango County.
“Election Days run from 5 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. or later. There can be one a year, or up to three. This year, we are encouraging half shifts, so which mean you would work from first thing in the morning till early afternoon, with relief from a new person until evening. In some towns, we might have the person begin mid-morning and work till early evening,” said Monahan.
Carol Franklin, Democratic Commissioner, explained there is an mandatory annual poll worker certification class that lasts approximately 2.5 hours and is held late summer. There is a test administered at the end of the class, which must have a passing grade in order to become a certified poll worker. Class time is compensated at a rate of $25. Additionally, you must be a Chenango County registered voter in order to become a poll worker.
On election day, whether you work a full or partial day, the hourly rate is $11.10. Regardless of the shift, it is a long day, but you are able to bring food and reading material or other activities to pass the time – as long as it is not political in nature – when and if the polls are slow. Depending on the election, it can be busy from the time the polls open until they close.
“You have the full support of the Board of Elections staff from the start of the day to the end of the day; we are a phone call away, or a visit if necessary. You will work with seasoned poll workers, as well as those who are new to this duty, just like yourself,” said Franklin.
“Please consider becoming part of what this great country is all about with the election process,” said Monahan.
Any questions can be directed to Mary Lou Monahan, Republican Commissioner at 607-337-1764, or Carol Franklin, Democratic Commissioner, at 607-337-1765.
