Tornado boys set new school record
GREENSBORO, N.C. – Four Norwich Purple Tornado seniors wrapped up their high school track and field careers in Greensboro, North Carolina over the weekend as they raced a members of the Sprint Medley Relay teams at the New Balance Outdoor Nationals hosted at North Carolina A&T Aggies Stadium.
Hailey Colabelli, Riley Marsh, Eric Conant and Gabe Gawronski raced their last race in a Tornado uniform. Colabelli and Marsh were joined by Miranda Cole and Angela Carlson for their emerging elite division of the race on Friday while Conant and Gawronski teamed up with David Berger and Griffin Mills one last time in the championship sprint medley relay class Sunday afternoon.
Friday afternoon saw the girls squad placed 21st out of 55 teams in the event with their time of 1:51.64. After the first three runners – Carlson, Marsh and Cole – finished their divided 400 meter lap, the Norwich team was five-tenths of a second behind the leader and in fourth place for their heat.
With Colabelli giving it her all for her final 400 meters of her career, the senior runner moved Norwich up a position as she ran the fourth fastest spilt (59.91 seconds) of the heat. The Lady Tornado placed third in their section and once the times were complied for the entire event, they came away with 21st place.
The foursome, who qualified for the event at the Oneonta Invitational earlier this season with a time of 1:53.04, were .24 seconds off from tying the Norwich school record for the event at the national meet.
The boys group raced on Sunday to a personal and school best time on the big stage, finishing the event at 1:33.49 for 15th place out of 56 teams scheduled to race. The same group of four runners also qualified for the event at the Oneonta Invitational, shattering the Norwich school record with a time of 1:34.96.
The previous record stood for less than a year as Berger, Gawronski and Conant ran with Zack Race for a time of 1:35.92. As Race graduated in 2018, Mills – a sophomore for the 2019 season – has stepped into the shoes of the former top Tornado speedster.
In Greensboro, the team once again crushed their record by 1.5 seconds with Berger, Mills and Conant setting the pace for the first 400 meters. The three spilt the one-lap distance into 200, 100 and 100 meters and sprinted to a time of 44.22 seconds.
Gawronski, in the same boat as his girls’ teammate Colabelli, took the baton one final time and matched his fastest 400 meter time of the season with a 49.27 – a time he ran at the New York State Championships a week earlier and the third fastest split of the heat.
Norwich placed third in their section of the Championship event and with their time, took home a 15th place finish.
The Purple Tornado track and field season has come to a close for 2019. Head coach Shaun Horan and the rest of the coaching staff will say good-bye to 16 seniors on this year’s team.
