Police: Final suspect arrested in Norwich assault case
NORWICH – Police said they've charged the last suspect in an assault case made a victim blind in one eye and fractured their skull.
Tyrone D. Lester Jr., 30, of 74 Birdsall St. in Norwich, was charged with first-degree assault, a class B felony, after police said Lester, Jonathan R. Booker, and Hannah E. Bard, caused serious physical injuries to the victim. All three have been charged with felony assault in the case.
According to Norwich Police Department Assistant Chief Scott Burlison, thanks to the efforts of Norwich police officers and Detective Reuben Roach, all suspects were tracked down and arrested in this case.
"Detective Roach did an excellent job tracking down suspects by following the evidence and conducting interviews," said Burlison. "At this point the investigation is closed, and it'll be taken care of in court from here on out."
He said the level of violence displayed in this case made it particularly important to capture the suspects as quickly as possible. He added that the victim was attacked by the group for several minutes, even after the victim fell to the ground along Lackawanna Avenue in downtown Norwich.
Norwich Police Department Detective Sergeant Reuben Roach said a piece of evidence that assisted with the investigation was a video that depicted "multiple individuals assaulting a single individual."
Police reported that at approximately 2:30 a.m., Aug. 3, the Norwich Police Department received a radio dispatch from the Chenango County 911 center about an individual who had been assaulted on Lackawanna Avenue.
According to the Norwich Police Department, Booker, Bard, and Lester, possibly along with others, caused serious physical injury to the victim by striking the victim about the head and face with punches and kicks.
Officers responded to the scene and found the victim who was then taken to the Chenango Memorial Hospital Emergency Room by one of the patrol officers. A short time later, the victim was transported to Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse for further treatment.
Police said injuries sustained by the victim include permanent loss of vision in the right eye, along with cheek bone and orbital socket fractures.
Lester was arraigned by Norwich City Court Judge Michael Genute and remanded to the Chenango County Correctional facility on $2500 bail. He is scheduled to appear back in court at a later date.
