B-G to make 4th straight Section IV Championship appearance

Bobcats defeats Tioga in determining set

CANDOR – A deciding tiebreaker set between the Bainbridge-Guilford Bobcats and the Tioga Tigers ended the a night filled with volleyball pool play. B-G defeated Tioga 25-17 in the one-set match, sending the Bobcats to their fourth straight Class D Section IV Championship game.
The top four teams each played two games against the other three and the two teams with the best record were going to punch their ticket to the championship.
Top-seed and host Candor went undefeated in the pool play action, winning all six games to secure a spot in the championship game early.
As the host team beat the other three teams, Bainbridge-Guilford finished with a record of 3-3. The Bobcats split with Tioga – the third seed in the bracket – and topped No. 4 Union Springs in both sets of the match.
The Tigers did the same as B-G, finishing 3-3 on the night.
As both Tioga and the Bobcats finished off the six game pool play action with the same record, one 25 point, win-by-two game was needed to determine Candor’s opponent in Saturday’s championship game.
With the long night coming to a close, the match win was going to come down to who had the energy to finish.
Bainbridge-Guilford jumped out to a 9-4 lead before Tioga took a timeout in the set to regroup. It worked for the Tigers as they pulled within three points a few moments later.
The Bobcats, however, once again put together run and forced Tioga to take another break in the action as B-G went on a 4-1 run.
Following the second Tioga timeout, the Tigers brought the score to a five point difference but the Bobcats still held the advantage.
Needing just two points, B-G head coach Tami Selfridge called a timeout to keep her girls settled and focused to close out the set.
Both points came without the Tigers scoring and the Bobcats finished 4-3 on the night to reach their fourth consecutive sectional title game.
The Bainbridge-Guilford team has won the last two Section IV Class D Championship matches and have made the trip to the New York State Tournament. The last time the Bobcats lost in the the title game was in November of 2016 when a young B-G team fell to Tioga.
The match between B-G and Candor is scheduled to start at 4 p.m. at Corning Painted Post High School. If the Bobcats win, they will head to the New York State Championship bracket for the third straight year.
