Lady Yellowjackets sting Norwich with late fourth quarter spurt
NORWICH – Separated by just two points entering the final eight minutes of play, it looked as if the Norwich and Oneonta girls game Wednesday night was going to come down to the wire.
That was until the Lady Yellowjackets made their offensive possessions count during the 11-0 spurt in the early minutes of the fourth, taking a 53-40 lead.
Norwich’s Emily Evans ended the scoring drought for the home with a layup but Oneonta continued to run, ending the quarter with 25 points to take a 67-45 Southern Tier Athletic Conference divisional win over the host Purple Tornado.
Evans added another basket from inside the paint and Sydney Coggins hit one of two foul shots to combine for Norwich’s five points in the closing minutes of the loss – just the third on the season for the Lady Tornado.
In the ping-pong type of contest, the two teams went back-and-forth through the first three quarters of play as Norwich and Oneonta exchanged several lead changes.
Each team was able to gain a slight advantage throughout but it didn’t last long as both found an answer to swing the momentum back into their favor.
The two teams were tied at the end of the first quarter but Oneonta was able to hold a one point lead at the halftime break.
The next two quarters of play were going to come down to which team was going to take care of the ball and capitalize on the other’s miscues.
Scoring nearly point for point in the third quarter, the Yellowjackets took the 42-40 lead into the final stanza of play.
In the 25-point fourth quarter, Ava Eichler and Anika Buzzy paced Oneonta as the two combined for 17 of the team’s points. Eichler, who knocked down four 3-pointers in the contest and two big ones in the fourth, ended the night with a game-high 22 points.
Buzzy finished with a double-double for the Yellowjackets as she scored 17 points and grabbed 14 rebounds in the road win.
Norwich was led by Margaret Dougher’s 19 points. Dougher, coming away with many crucial baskets for the Tornado, matched Eichler’s made 3-point total as 13 of her points came from behind the arc.
Evans tallied 11 points for Norwich and teammate Abby Hansen contributed eight.
Norwich (7-3) travel to Saratoga Springs on Saturday for a non-league matchup with the Section II team. Game time is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
