Norwich School adding live streaming service for sporting events
NORWICH – Norwich City School District is adding a live streaming service that will allow parents to watch sporting events from home.
Norwich Athletic Director Rich Turnbull announced at the last board of education meeting that they signed a five year contract with the National Federation of State High School (NFHS) Network which will allow them to live stream sporting events to any device with the NFHS app.
According to Turnbull, one camera will be installed at the stadium and the other will be at the basketball court.
Parents will be able to live stream not only home games, but also games taking place at neighboring schools who also have the system.
“A lot of our competing schools have it, Like Johnson City, and Chenango Valley, and Owego there’s a lot of schools that have it now,” said Turnbull. “So now if we can’t get down there, we can watch it here because we’re all on the same network now.”
Sporting events aren't the only thing that the live stream service will cover. Turnbull said that being able to live stream events like graduation and concerts was a big selling point when proposing the idea to Interim Superintendent Dr. Bowers.
The new system also opens up opportunities for additional extra curricular activities at the school. Turnbull stated that the students will eventually be able to announce and give commentary on the games during the live stream.
“One of my biggest goals was to develop communication,” said Turnbull, “I've also started updating our twitter feed.”
The school is currently working to have the cameras installed, and will announce when the streaming service is ready to use.
