Lady Tornado back to winning ways after victory over Warriors makes 3 in a row

Bobcats’ Leizear drops 28 in win against Harpursville

NORWICH – A strong start to a game isn’t something unusual for the Norwich Lady Purple Tornado. Monday night, the Tornado squad continued to get out a big lead after scoring 25 points in the opening stanza. Norwich then cruised to a 80-34 win over the visiting Chenango Valley Warriors for the second time this season.
Margaret Dougher of the Tornado came out shooting, knocking down three 3-pointers in the first to pace the team with 11 of the team’s 25. Emily Evans chipped in another eight points in the quarter as the Norwich team took a 22-point lead.
Dougher finished with a game-high 19 points in the win and both Abby Flynn and Sydney Coggins reached double figures in the scoring column. Coggins tallied 12 while the Norwich senior on the inside ended the night with 10 points.
As a team, the Purple Tornado scored 30 of their 80 points in the game behind the 3-point arc with six different members hitting at least one from long range.
Norwich used balanced scoring throughout the team for the remaining three quarters of the team. The home team tacked on another 17 points in the second quarter to go into the locker room ahead 42-13.
After the break, the Tornado held Chenango Valley to a combined second half total of 21 points while Norwich went on to outscore the Warriors by 17, scoring 23 in the third and 15 in the fourth.
Coming in and playing a substantial amount of minutes in the second half was the Purple Tornado bench to a combined 25 points in the win.
Maddy Morris scored eight while Abby Hansen ended the night with seven. Jenae Evans added five points, Jordan Hess knocked down an off-the-glass 3-pointer and Grace Bookamer scored a bucket late in the contest.
Mackenzie Hess, a starting guard for Norwich, also kicked in six points.
Chenango Valley’s Emily Goodstal led the Warriors with 15 points in the loss.
The Lady Purple Tornado (10-5) host the second of their three game home stand on Thursday against Chenango Forks.
Bainbridge-Guilford 54, Harpursville 21
HARPURSVILLE – Following a Friday night loss to Walton, the Lady Bobcats of Bainbridge-Guilford bounced back to take a Midstate Athletic Conference win over the host Harpursville Hornets 54-21 Monday night.
After a slow start in the first quarter, B-G senior Macie Leizer caught fire as she knocked down four 3-pointers in the second and tallied 16 of the Bobcats 22 points before the halftime intermission. Leizear finished the game leading all scorers with 28 points and hit a total of five shots from beyond the arc.
Adding fuel to the fire was teammate Celeste Baldwin as she ended the night with four made 3-point field goals to add 15 points in the scoring column for Bainbridge-Guilford.
The Bobcats held just a four point lead after the first but the huge second quarter by Leizer pushed the team ahead by 13 points.
Defensively, B-G held Harpursville to less than 10 points in each of the fourth quarters to coast to the win.
The Hornets were led by Caidence Ryder’s 10 points in the game and Mackenize Whidden added five.
Bainbridge-Guilford also saw five points from Taylor Parson, four by Jordan Parsons and two scored by Savannah Corbin.
Leizear and Baldwin once again led the Bobcats with points as Baldwin paced the team with 17 and Leizear scored 15 but it wasn’t enough to stop McKenzie Clough and the Warriors as Walton claimed the 44-33 MAC victory.
Clough finished with a game-high 26 points with 17 coming in the second half.
Walton jumped out to a 12-4 lead after the first quarter and used the eight point advantage to secure the win.
Bainbridge-Guilford battled through, attempting to chip away at the Warriors’ lead. The Bobcats did so in both the second and fourth quarters as they outscored Walton by a point in each of the stanzas but it wasn’t enough to overcome.
Sarah Cannistra added four points for B-G in the loss.
The Bobcats host Oxford on Wednesday for senior night. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:15 p.m.
