EARLVILLE - Police said the Lighthouse Community Church in Earlville was set on fire Wednesday night, with fire department officials spending hours overnight battling the flames.
According to Earlville Fire Department Chief Jim Doyle, a 911 call was received at approximately 10:40 p.m. Wednesday night stating that a church located at 53 South Main Street was on fire.
New York State Police Trooper Aga Dembinska said Brian C. Carver was arrested for third-degree arson, a class C felony, at the scene Thursday night. The Chenango County District Attorney’s Office also confirmed that Carver has been charged.
Doyle said the church was fully involved upon arrival, and that firefighters were on the scene until early Thursday morning.
“It took about three minutes for us to get to the station, and another three to arrive on scene,” said Doyle. “When we arrived the north side of the building was fully involved.”
Doyle said emergency responders were on the scene until about 6 a.m. Thursday morning. He said a section of the church reignited, further slowing the process.
“We’re actually back there now due to a reignition,” he said at approximately 8:20 a.m. Thursday. “We’re waiting for emergency management and the fire investigators to finish their investigation before we know the official cause of the fire.”
He added that members of law enforcement from the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office and New York State Police were both present at the scene.
Doyle said mutual aid from the departments including Hamilton, Sherburne, North Norwich, Georgetown, and Smyrna fire department was greatly appreciated.
“At this point all I can say is that the scene is still under investigation,” said Doyle.
Police said the name of the arson suspect will be released at a later date.
