City of Norwich approves repairs to city streets and community tennis court

NORWICH – The City of Norwich Common Council approved the Department of Public Works to move ahead on a bid for repairing five streets in Norwich.

According to DPW Superintendent Edward Pepe, the city received three bids for the repairs. Pepe recommended the city go with the lowest bid, which was $125,800.35.

The winning bid came in from Lancaster, the same company that owns Chenango Asphalt.

“Our budget is $252,000,” said Pepe. “We have 67 man holes 73 catch basins on Canasawacta, Cortland, Miller, Newton and Pleasant street. A majority of them are needing to be rebuilt.”

Pepe said they've already started working on the repairing the manholes and catch basins.

“We've already started working on it because were short staff. We're trying our best to get a jump on the work so we've already gotten into it. We want to be done by the end of July,” he said.

Pepe also proposed a plan to repair the tennis courts at Weiler Park.

“The tennis court at Weiler Park has severe cracking that need to be repaired or it will only get worse. It will cost $32,000 cost to fix. The plan is to use $27,000 from the capital reserve fund for parks maintenance and the remaining $5,000 from the parks budget to cover the rest of it,” said Pepe.

Repairs would include pressure washing the dirt and algae off the courts, filling the cracks, then taking low areas that pond up with water and leveling them with a patch, and then applying a coating the entire surface area.

Pepe said the bid includes the addition of pickle-ball lines.

“The repairs would also include pickle-ball lines, which is a popular sport that's growing. There wasn't much additional cost to add the lines so I think it's a good idea. It would cost $1600 to add that.”

Pepe also said the lines for the courts can be any color they want and suggested purple courts to represent the Norwich School colors.

Alderman Robert Jeffery moved to approve the tennis court repairs, saying “I will move for the approval of the tennis court repairs. I just think it's really great I know that those tennis courts get utilized a lot so I am totally in favor of this.”

Alderman David Zieno seconded the motion with all council members in favor.
