Four local basketball stars highlight All-State teams

Four more nab honorable mention selections

NORWICH – A trio of Norwich basketball players and a junior for Sherburne-Earlville were featured on the 2019-2020 season All-State teams while four others from both the Purple Tornado and Greene Trojans rosters were named to the honorable mention teams, wrapping up the winter sports season awards.
Norwich seniors Abby Flynn, Carson Maynard, JT Vinal and Tommy Flanagan were joined by senior Nate Barry of the Trojans to cap off their high school basketball careers with the selection. Junior Tessa Cole of the S-E Lady Marauders, Purple Tornado sophomore Margaret Dougher and Greene’s Drew Erickson – an eighth-grader – also saw their names on the list for the outstanding performances throughout the year.
Abby Flynn, Norwich senior
Class B Second Team
Flynn, a four-year varsity player for head coach Josh Bennett and the Lady Purple Tornado, ended her final season as a Section IV Class B champion for the second straight year. The senior helped pave the long and tough road, filled with obstacles all season long with her leadership on the court for Norwich.
Nearly averaging a double-double over the course of the 22-game schedule (16-6 record), Flynn scored 14.4 points per game and pulled down 9.6 rebounds each contest to be a strong force on the inside. She also added a large presence on the defensive end of the floor, coming away with 4.3 steals per game.
This season, the Tornado senior was named a Southern Tier Athletic Conference (STAC) All-Star and was a first team selection for the Basketball Coaches Association of New York’s (BCANY) all Section IV team.
Flynn will be continuing her basketball career at the collegiate level. She will be attending SUNY Cortland and will be playing for Jacey Brooks, the Red Dragons head coach.
Tessa Cole, Sherburne-Earlville junior
Class C Third Team
An all-around player on the hardwood, Tessa Cole ended the season leading her team in nearly all statistical categories. The Lady Marauders junior finished the year with an average of 23.4 per game – a total of 491 points scored – and came away with 6 rebounds, 4.7 steals and 3.8 assists each game.
Starting the season 250 points away from the 1,000 point milestone, Cole reached the mark at Clinton in January with a 3-point bucket in the second quarter.
Cole tallied 20 or more points in 14 games this season while eclipsing the 30-point mark on five different occasions. A sharp shooter from behind the arc, she knocked down 65 3-point field goals in 21 games to lead all of Section III girls basketball players.
The S-E point guard ranked in the top 10 for four different stat columns in Section III and was named the Center State Conference (CSC) Division-I Most Valuable Player for 2019-2020. As she is a junior, she will return to the Marauders roster for her final year in the maroon and white.
Carson Maynard, Norwich senior
Class B Eighth Team
Standing at 6 feet-2 inches, the Purple Tornado guard found his way through the paint for a tough lay-up which usually led to a basket and the foul or free throw attempts. Maynard led the team in foul shots for the 2019-2020 season, making 83 of his 113 attempts (73.5 percent).
As Norwich’s leading scoring for the year, the senior averaged 16.5 points per game. He recorded 20 or more points in seven games this season – all of which led to a Norwich win – helping lead to one of the 17 wins for the Purple Tornado.
Maynard ended his final season in the purple and white with 86 assists (3.9 per game) to lead the team and added 6.3 rebounds per contest to his end of season stat line, finishing second for Norwich.
The Purple Tornado finished the year with a final record of 17-5 and an appearance in the Section IV Class B championship game.
The Norwich senior also named to the BCANY All-Section team and added a STAC All-Star selection to his accolades for his final season. Maynard will attend the University of Alabama in the fall.
Margaret Dougher, Norwich sophomore
Class B 14th Team
With this being her first year on the Lady Purple Tornado, Dougher made her existence known early in her career. The Norwich sophomore finished the season with a total of 43 made 3-point field goals, leading the team behind the arc.
The youngster stepped into a starting role early and filled a scoring gap that Norwich needed after losing several senior at the end of the 2018-2019 season. Dougher ended the year averaging 12.6 points per game and led the Purple Tornado in the scoring column in a considerable amount of game throughout the year.
Norwich’s second leading scorer came away with a STAC All-Star nod and was selected to the BCANY All-Section second team.
Honorable Mention Selections
Norwich’s JT Vinal ended the season averaging a double-double with 11.1 points and 12.8 rebounds per game. The Purple Tornado senior took down Charlie Wightman’s long-stand career steals record along with Norwich’s single season steals (101) and rebounds (282) record. Vinal was named as STAC All-Star in the final year with the Tornado.
The Purple Tornado’s Tommy Flanagan topped the area’s made 3-point field goal list, hitting a 75 for the season – some of those came when Norwich needed a momentum swing a crucial point in the contest. With his 15.5 points per game, the Norwich senior finished as the team’s second leading scorer. He added 49 assists and 76 rebounds in the 22-game schedule for the Purple Tornado.
Greene senior Nate Barry was big on the inside for the Trojans’ this season. In his final year in the green and white, Barry scored 12.4 points per game and pulled down 7.2 boards each contest, aiding in Greene’s trip the Section IV Class C semifinals. The Trojans’ big man also dished out an average of 2.9 assists per game. Barry was also named as a Midstate Athletic Conference (MAC) First Team All-Star to end this basketball career in Greene.
The youngest local selection to honorable mention was Drew Erickson, an eighth-grader on Greene’s roster for the 2019-2020 season. Joining Barry as a MAC First Team All-Star, the budding stand-out athlete averaged 12.6 points per contest. Most of his points came for the season came behind the 3-point line as Erickson made a total of 33 long-range field goals and added 58 rebounds for the season.
