Norwich Business Improvement District raises funds for local merchants
NORWICH – During Tuesday night’s Norwich Common Council meeting, Alderman David Zieno encouraged residents to help local merchants by donating to the Downtown Norwich Relief Fund.
The fund was started by the Norwich Business Improvement District as a way to help local businesses get back on their feet.
“I’d like to note that the Norwich Business Improvement District has started a GoFundMe page, ‘The Downtown Norwich Relief Fund’, where people can donate to help our downtown Norwich merchants get back in business,” said Zieno.
The fundraiser was started on April 13 by Business Improvement District Administrator Ann Coe. So far with nine donors they have raised $700 of the $15,000 goal.
“I have been in touch with several of our downtown merchants. Not only have most of them been shutdown but many of them have not received unemployment benefits. They’ve been hit very hard by this pandemic. However they patiently waited for the right time to open up in order to keep Norwich safe. They’ve truly in leaders in the pandemic fight in that regard,” said Zieno.
Zieno urged community members to shop with local merchants first before looking elsewhere for goods and services.
Some local businesses to consider are stores such as Mclaughlin’s, which is open for curbside pickup and post their newest products regularly on their Facebook page. Service Pharmacy has drive-through prescription pickup, as well as free drug delivery. Also, Pires Flower Basket can deliver within a 50 mile radius and have a variety of vegetable and herb plants.
