Norwich zips past Windsor with second half surge
NORWICH – With unseasonably cool temperatures and some relatively high wind speeds at game time, the Norwich Purple Tornado girls varsity soccer team turned the temperature gage on high in the second half as they speed past the Windsor Black Knights to a 7-4 victory on Thursday night.
The Tornado faced a 3-1 deficit early in the contest before a surge of offense tore through the Windsor defense with a stunning 6-1 goal turn around in favor of the Tornado. Norwich freshman Asaine Mutabiilwa and sophomore teammate Elli Ryan each scored their first career varsity goals.
Tornado sophomore Sarah Davis scored a hat trick for the purple glad girls and senior Sydney Coggins pitched in two goals of her own and added in four assists.
With the Tornado offense going full-tilt, the Norwich defense proved to be just as potent. The quartet of Margaret Dougher, Emily Flynn, Emma Scheuer, and Jordan Hess was the defensive stronghold that Norwich needed in the second half as they turned away numerous Windsor offensive attacks.
“Great hustle by our defense who had no subs” said Norwich Head Coach Doug Coggins, “Margaret Dougher and Emily Flynn played through constant overloading, Emma and Jordan had their hands full with very fast outside forwards.”
“We had a lot of girls playing outside their comfort zone” added Coggins, “Elli Ryan did an excellent job in midfield…Bree [Minor] did a fine job with the wind and hard shots.”
Norwich (4-1) returns to the pitch on Tuesday, April 6th at 4:30pm when they travel to Windsor for a rematch against the Windsor Black Knights.
