Norwich Girls Volleyball sweeps Cooperstown

COOPERSTOWN – Not much went in favor of the Hawkeye’s on Tuesday night when Norwich traveled to Cooperstown, in a rematch of an earlier match this season. Norwich won 3-1 in their first outing against the Coop’ back on April 6th, and this contest proved to be no different. The Purple Tornado girls’ varsity volleyball team swept Cooperstown in three-straight games 25-15, 25-23, 25-23.
Norwich took no time settling in as they jetted out to an opening game victory, followed by two straight close games at the end of the match. NHS was rolling on all cylinders as they recorded nearly 84 percent of their serves landed in-bounds.
Maddy Morris and Madisyn Ryan recorded 25 assists to lead Norwich and 10 assists respectively to pace the Tornado in that offensive category. Sammi Taylor led NHS in digs with 15 and Meg Lindridge pitched in nine digs.
It was hard to ignore the sheer power that the Tornado were experiencing on offense as the Hawkeyes were tasked with defending the powerful play-finishing ability of Lauren Squires and Marissa Ramey.
No stranger to dropping the hammer on opposing teams, Lauren Squires recorded a game high 23 kills and fellow offensive lightening rod Marissa Ramey added in 15 kills of her own.
“[The] girls played well and had fun doing it” said Norwich head coach Shelly Alger, “They [the girls] amaze me how far they have come in such a short period of time.”
Norwich continues their successful season later this week when they travel to Otsego County rival; the Oneonta Yellowjackets.
Norwich will face-off against Oneonta at Oneonta High School on Thursday April 15, with the first game between the two squads slated to begin at 6:00pm.
