CHENANGO COUNTY – After more than a decade on the job, the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office has promoted a deputy to the recently opened detective slot in response to his hard work and dedication.
According to Chenango County Sheriff’s Office Lt. Joshua Gould, Anthony Lawrence was promoted to a detective’s position after receiving numerous awards for his leadership and tenacity in the field.
On May 11, 2021, Chenango County Sheriff Ernest Cutting issued a Detective Star to newly assigned Detective Anthony Lawrence, who was joined by Lt. Joshua Gould and Detective Sergeant Gary Miller for the presentation.
“It’s the natural progression of someone who has done a good job as an officer, and he’s handled his cases well and worked hard over his years here,” said Gould. “Anthony has been in the department going on his 11th year, he’s had an outstanding career, with approximately a dozen Deputy of the Month awards for his efforts.”
“I think everyone in the department is happy for him, and it’s definitely well deserved.”
Gould said Lawrence was entered into a trial period with three other officers, which allowed each officer to do detective work to see how they fit in the position. He said each officer had a month in the role, and supervisors determined that Lawrence was the best fit at this time.
“We wanted to make sure everyone enjoyed the job, and that they’d be good in that position,” he added. “It’s not always the big cases everyone thinks of when they think of the detective role.”
“We felt he was the most ready at this point in his career.”
Gould said Lawrence will be filling the position of longtime detective John Fern following his retirement. He said Fern started in 2001, quickly making detective and assisting in every major homicide for at least the past 10 years.
He added that fortunately there is currently an excellent crew at the sheriff’s office to help pick up the mantle, and their work continues on.
“John did a great job in that role, and he will be missed,” said Gould. “He investigated countless sex abuse and fraud cases in his time at the sheriff’s office, and his experience played a vital role in those cases.”
