NORWICH — Tuesday, the Chenango County Area Agency on Aging celebrated their 50 years of serving the community. Hundreds of people took to West Park to enjoy the beautiful weather, activities, food, music, camaraderie.
Activities included trivia, guessing jars, and paint and plant. Chenango County Historian Henry Drexler provided “A Walk Down Memory Lane” in the Guernsey Memorial Library.
Many seats and tents were filled with inquisitive community members; seniors and youth.
“We are super excited to honor some additional people here today that provide service to our county,” said Director of Chenango County Area Agency on Aging Heather Felter.
She read a resolution recognizing the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Chenango County Area Agency on Aging office.
She said the agency adoption was moved on October 9, 1973 by a board resolution. The Chenango County Board of Supervisors endorsed and supported the application by the County of Chenango to the New York State Office for the Aging for the establishment of a Chenango County Office for Aging.
Felter said some of the purposes set up 50 years ago included planning environmental and personal services to meet the needs of the county's elderly population, identifying the major problems affecting the elderly, conducting research in finding the needs of the elderly community, reviewing programs and more.
On January 14, 1974, Mr. William Fiorello, known as Bill, was appointed as the Administrative Officer of the Chenango County Area Agency on Aging and on May 13, 1974, the Board of Supervisors appointed an advisory council to the agency.
Felter said in the span of 50 years, there have only been six directors, which started with Bill, as the Administrative Officer. He served until March 1986 and passed in 2011.
She invited the Fiorello family to honor Bill Fiorello.
The certificate of recognition was presented to his family members for all of the hard years of starting to role the agency out and the services he provided to all of the people he served in the community.”
Family member Dana Gross said, “This would mean the world to him, but sadly he passed away 13 years ago. This was a great honor for us to receive this for him.”
Additional directors, Denise Newvine, Deborah Sanderson, Brian Wessels, Nicole Ross and Heather Felter were recognized and given certificates.
“The board of supervisors extend their congratulations and best wishes to the Chenango County Area Agency on Aging and encourages all citizens to reflect on past accomplishments that this agency has provided to this county,” said Felter.
She thanked and applauded the agency staff and volunteers, who day in and day out provide services to the community.
“I appreciate every day you are here,” said Felter.
Area Agency on Aging Executive Director Greg Olsen, thanked the staff, volunteers, past and present and said they touch over 1.7 million people a year, to help stay as independent as possible.
He said, “This is God’s work.”
The ceremony ended with certificates awarded by representatives for Senator Peter Oberacker, Marc Molinaro, and Assemblyman Joe Angelino.
Light snacks were provided by Kozmo's, Subway Subs, Cottage Bakery, and Chobani and the entertainment was by Norwich City School District Chamber Orchestra and Jazz Combo.
