NY State Police investigate crash involving school bus in Madison

MADISON - On May 7, 2026, at approximately 7:18 a.m., State Police responded to a two-vehicle personal injury crash on Route 20 in the Town of Madison.

The investigation determined a 2007 Dodge Ram pickup truck operated by  Joshua A. Smith Sr., age 35, of Eaton, NY, struck the rear of a Madison Central School District bus that was stopped on Route 20.

The operator of the pickup truck became trapped in the vehicle and was extricated by emergency responders before being transported to Wynn Hospital for treatment of minor injuries. Two juvenile passengers from the pickup truck were also transported for evaluation.

The school bus was operated by  Savannah G. Bridge, age 29, of Madison, NY. The driver and two juvenile passengers aboard the bus were transported to Hamilton Hospital with minor injuries.

The investigation revealed the school bus had activated its warning lights and stopped prior to the collision.

As a result of the investigation, Smith was issued numerous traffic tickets. The investigating trooper determined Smith was following too closely and was distracted while operating the vehicle.
