Local athletes compete at NYSPHSAA outdoor track and field championships

WEBSTER— The 2026 NYSPHSAA outdoor track and field championships were held over the past weekend, featuring multiple Chenango County athletes at a new facility at Webster-Schroder High School.

Anthony Bourn- Oxford/Greene- Junior
The junior from Oxford Academy, who won the sectional title for the 3000 meter steeplechase at the state qualifiers, finished 37th overall in the federation and 14th in Class C. He hit a new personal record time of 10:28.76, which is also a new school record!

Bourn finished the 2026 season with a MAC championship title and a Class C title.

Appalonia Bushaw-Harpursville/Afton- Sophomore
The sophomore competed in the girls’ outdoor pentathlon at states after winning the sectional title at the state qualifiers. She finished 16th overall in the federation with 2892 points and third in class C. She even crushed the Harpursville-Afton program record. She completed the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 16.22 seconds. She cleared 1.60 meters (five feet, three inches) in the high jump. She threw for 7.79 meters (25 feet, six and 3/4 inches) in the shot put. She jumped 5.28 meters (17 feet, three and 3/4 inches) in the long jump and ran the 800 in 2:51.77.
Coach Josh Quick worked with Appalonia on throwing for the shot put and praised her for her efforts.
“ As a throws coach, she was great to work with and has so many natural talents,” Quick said. “She was very coachable and hoping she will continue in this event for the future so I can work with her more.”
Coach Collin Smith added that Appalonia is “quite the athlete and character too.”
Appalonia finishes the 2026 outdoor season with a section IV championship in the pentathlon, two second place finishes in the high jump and 100 meter hurdles, and a Class D Sectionals title in the long jump.

Connor Marshall- Norwich-Senior
The senior from Norwich High School qualified for states in the triple jump after winning the section IV title at state qualifiers. At states, Marshall finished 14th in the federation with a new personal record jump of 41 feet, one inch. Marshall finished the 2026 season with a Sectional title, a Section IV, Class B title.

Harpo Hardt-B-G-Junior
The Bainbridge-Guilford junior, who smashed his own school record last week at state qualifiers to advance to states after a Section IV title, competed in the 110 meter hurdles at states. Hardt finished second in the federation and in Class C with a time of 14.79 seconds, resetting the record again. With Harpo only being a junior and will be a senior next year, Coach Nick Mayo cannot wait until next year to work with him and send him back to states. Hardt set a new school record in the 400 meter hurdles as well this year with a time of 59.41 and in the triple jump with a jump of 42 feet, 11 and a half inches.

Isaiah Hampton-B-G-Senior
Hampton joined teammate Hardt at states after winning both the high and long jump at state qualifiers.
In the long jump, Hampton took second with a jump of 22 feet, 11 inches, resetting his own school record in the event. Hampton tied for 29th in the high jump, clearing six feet, one inch.
“Isaiah had an amazing season and broke six school records between indoor and outdoor,” Coach Nick Mayo said.
Hampton holds the record in the long jump, the outdoor pentathlon, the 100 meter dash, the 200 meter dash, and the high jump for outdoor track and field.

Kaden Downey-Norwich-Senior
The senior from local Norwich High School qualified for states in the shot put event. At states, Kaden finished eighth in both the federation and in Class B with a throw of 48 feet, five and a half inches. Kaden finished the 2026 season with a section IV, Class B title and set a new personal best throw of 49 feet, three and 3/4 inches at the Oneonta Invitational.

Keegan Waltz-Oxford/Greene-Senior
“He came, saw, and conquered,” Coach Shannon Gawronski said about Keegan at states.
The senior from Greene joined merged teammate Anthony Bourn at states after he won the 400 meter dash at state qualifiers. Waltz then went on to compete at states, where Gawronski commented that Waltz was a bit bummed at his preliminary performance, even though he set a new personal record with a time of 48.17 seconds.
Gawronski said that Waltz started off slow in the prelims and then hauled to make it to the finals the next day. She gave him the advice to come out faster at the start.
He took her advice and finished fifth overall in the federation (combined league and classes) and was the fastest finisher in Class C to become a Class C state champion, running the event in 48.66 seconds.
Gawronski said it was a great performance.
Keegan finished the 2026 outdoor season with a Section IV title and a new school record of the 48.17 seconds in the 400 meters. He also currently holds the school record in the outdoor pentathlon and 300 meters, 110 meter hurdles, the long jump and high jump, all set last year.
