The 29th annual Norwich Gus Macker tournament is underway this weekend

NORWICH— The 29th annual Norwich Gus Macker tournament is here! Macker set up will take place this morning around 8 a.m. while the official tournament will kick off with tonight’s Blueox’s third annual knockout competition at 6 p.m.

A full schedule of events is as follows, so come join in on the fun.

Friday, July 10:

The tournament setup will be throughout the day, with registration opening from 4 p.m to 7.pm in the Norwich Firehouse. Registration is sponsored by UHS Chenango Memorial Hospital. At 5 p.m., the concession stands will open, where vendors will be serving food, just in time for the BlueOx Knock-out competition at 6 p.m.

Saturday, July 11:

Registration will be from 7 am to 11. Am. Opening ceremonies will take place at 8 am with remarks and introductions from Scott McNeal and his Macker staff. There will be an opening prayer by Zach Thorp. With the national anthem being played over the speaker, the Do or Die Shot taken by Mayor Robert Jeffrey rounding up the events.

Games will begin at approximately 8:30 a.m., depending on the brackets featuring 313 teams compared to 315 last year. The Dream Court will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., while Live Event NY’s Kid Zone will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Battle of the Badges :

After Springbrook and Achieve took to the court for a unified basketball game at noon last year, the Battle of the Badges game returns for a second time. The first time was played in 2024 in a friendly heroes game between the Norwich Fire and Police Departments.

The Battle of the Badges game also shows a great opportunity for the two departments to be seen outside of an emergency situation.

Sunday, July 12:

Games begin at 8 a.m. as the Dream Court runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and the Kids Zone from 10 to 5 p.m.

Come out and watch basketball on every court from A to X and don’t forget about Top Men’s and Women’s. Support local vendors at East Main Park and the Auxiliary selling Gilligan’s ice cream near the Firehouse. Challenge Gus to a game of “G-U-S” before opening ceremonies on the Top men’s court. Take lots of pictures and just have fun!
