NORWICH – Higher gas prices are driving up budget expenses for the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office.

The Sheriff’s Office has sought a referral from the Chenango County Finance Committee to approve a $40,000 transfer to help cover fuel costs for the remainder of the year.

The department says funds will be taken from the salaries earmarked for two nursing positions that have been vacant all year.

The money transfer will go before the Chenango County Board of Supervisors for final approval next week.
