OXFORD – Several patriotic activities were celebrated during the recognition of Oxford’s 250th Anniversary of America, one of which was the presentation of a very patriotic “Quilt of Valor.” American Legion Auxiliary (ALA) Unit 376 received a special Quilt of Valor from an ALA member in CT.

Extraordinary quilts like this one have strict guidelines for the creators to follow before being allowed to carry the name, “Quilts of Valor”. The intent of the Quilt of Valor is to “cover the veterans touched by war with comfort and healing”. This donated quilt was destined for someone very special.  
On July 25, the 2026 American Legion Post 376 Commander Jessica Henninge, ALA Unit 376 President Terrell Sutton, Past-ALA Presidents Louise Spicer, Jeanie Petersen, Roberta Knoll, and some special family members held a celebration at the NYS Veterans’ Home, to award resident, George Schwager. George is a US Army veteran of the Korean War era. His daughter and son-in-law were there for the special event which took place during the Vets’ Home Car Show. 

A personalized patch of recognition, sewn on to the Quilt of Valor quilt, states, “We thank you for your unselfish service, patriotism, valor and great sacrifice for each of us in this country. We hope this quilt will help you to know that our appreciation and heartfelt best wishes are with you.” 

Unit 376 President Sutton said, “Thank you for your service and sacrifice in serving our nation”. She then placed the quilt in its protective pillowcase and awarded it to George. 

The unique quilt was handmade and delivered to Oxford by Unit 376 member, Bernice Hovencamp of Bloomfield, CT, formerly of Oxford, NY. Bernice belongs to the Sew Thankful Quilters of Avon Congregational Church of Avon, CT, and they make Quilts of Valor. 

To use the term Quilt of Valor, Quilts of Valor, or QOV, the quilt must be a specific size, have a label with required information, awarded (not gifted), and recorded.
