No one injured in car, tractor trailer crash

SMYRNA – A car collided with a tractor trailer at an intersection along County Road 20 Monday, causing the truck to skid across the road and crash into a nearby building.
The Sherburne Fire Department, with personnel from the Smyrna and North Norwich Fire Departments, responded to the scene at about 3:45 yesterday. No injuries were reported.
The New York State Police said a car driven by Delbert Monday of Plymouth was traveling along Sherburne 4 Corners Road when it failed to halt at the stop sign intersection at Cty Rd. 20. The car struck the tractor trailer’s side, damaging the truck’s gas tank and side panel.
Troopers said the truck’s operator, Patrick K. Matteson of Smyrna, swerved to avoid the collision, resulting in his cab crashing into a nearby two-story building, causing his skidded trailer to block traffic.
The building, located at 253 Cty. Rd. 20, is owned by Betty Pinney. She said the structure is a historical building and is currently used as a workshop. The Sherburne Fire Department closed off the structure, fearing it was in danger of collapse following the accident.
Police said they ticketed Monday with failing to stop at a stop sign and Matteson for operating an oversized trailer on a non-qualified road.
County Rd. 20 was closed down for more than two hours yesterday as crews worked to remove the damaged vehicles.
