GREENE – It was an exciting night at the Greene High School gymnasium as the Greene Trojans girls’ basketball team hosted neighboring Oxford in a thrilling league game. Greene honored its class of 2025 seniors before picking up a late 43-39 victory to stay on top of the MAC.
Prior to the game, Greene honored seniors Claire Flanagan, Kenley Jenks, Cali Knapp, and Abby Yahner.
“Our seniors have done an amazing job and have laid a great foundation for the younger players,” Coach Dave Gorton said previously.
Greene also recognized Oxford seniors Taegan Manwarren, Abby Denz, Christine Seiler, and Emily Holbert and gave gifts to them.
After the senior celebration, both teams got to work on the court, showing an expected physical and intense matchup. Both teams were off to a slow start in the first quarter as Greene was held without a basket until Cali Knapp hit a three to tie the game at 3:43. Greene took a brief 5-4 lead after the first and then both teams continued to battle it out before halftime. Greene led 23-15 before a wild finish in the second half.
It was a back-and-forth third and fourth quarter. Greene thought they had set the tone by having an eight-point lead with under two minutes left of the third quarter, but Oxford came right back in the fourth and even took the lead.
Oxford’s Taegan Manwarren and Margaret Rovente knocked in some threes while Aubrey Rickard blocked and Abby Denz stole the ball. Aubrey Rickard also added a three to help Oxford go up, but then Greene got back on track and tied the game and went up by one themselves.
Abby Yahner added the go-ahead basket with under a minute and then was fouled the next possession, where she made one of two free-throws.
Oxford had the ball and picked up multiple offensive rebounds, but lost possession with under 20 seconds left. Cali Knapp was fouled, but missed both free-throws, giving Oxford one last chance, but they turned the ball over. Yahner made the final two free-throws to secure the victory with seconds remaining.
Yahner led the Trojans with 15 points as Knapp finished with 11 and Josie Dutcher knocked in a few threes for 10 points. Mia Yahner added four points as Claire Flanagan had a three in the third quarter.
Margaret Rovente led Oxford with 13 points as Taegan Manwarren and Aubrey Rickard both finished with nine points. Abby Denz added five points and Emmalee Reiss with three points in the second quarter.
Greene (5-0, 10-1) hosts Sidney on Friday, January 24 at 7:15 p.m. Oxford (2-3, 8-5) heads to Unatego on Wednesday at 7:15 p.m.
