OXFORD — 15-year-old Evan Johnson of Oxford recently tested his metal on a national stage, competing in the 2026 Youth Nationals Demolition Derby in Washington Court House, Ohio. To the best of local knowledge, Evan was the sole competitor representing Chenango County at the event.
Driving car No. 53 in the compact class, Johnson earned a spot at the national event after capturing first place at the Hartford Derby in August.
The Youth Nationals drew more than 80 youth drivers in the compact class alone, with competitors traveling from 16 states and Canada. During his Saturday heat, Johnson earned a Wild Child Award, a performance that propelled him into Sunday’s feature.
Demolition derby is a family tradition for the Johnsons. He is a third-generation driver, following in the footsteps of his grandfather, Wayne Johnson, and father, Kyle Johnson. Racing is firmly rooted in the household: his sister, Allison Johnson, also competes and famously took home first place and a Mad Dog award at age 12 in her very first derby.
Evan was not the only family member making the trip to Ohio; he competed alongside his 12-year-old cousin, Harper Rogers of Madison County.
Congratulations Evan and family!
