Legion auxiliary to host "Welcome Home Vietnam Celebration"
MARATHON – The American Legion Auxiliary (ALA) 6th District is organizing a "Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Celebration" at the Marathon Civic Center from 1 to 5 p.m. on Saturday, March 30.
All Vietnam veterans of New York, their families, American Legion family members, and members of the community are invited to the reception, parade, and photo gallery for the celebration. People are also encouraged to provide a photo of a Vietnam veteran to be displayed in the gallery.
Volunteers and donations are greatly appreciated by the ALA, which can be contacted by calling the 6th District President Janet Elston at (607) 372-1935 or emailing nyalacommunityservice@gmail.com.
A press release from the American Legion Auxiliary states, "Our Vietnam veterans were not welcomed home in the same way those of WWI and WWII were. When those veterans returned home, they faced verbal insults and sometimes physical assaults for servicing the USA in an unpopular war. We hope that this celebration can help to heal some of those wounds."
The American Legion is celebrating 100 years of service this year, a century after its founding in 2019. Today membership stands at over 2.4 million in 14,000 posts worldwide. The American Legion Auxiliary, also established in 1919, has nearly 750,000 members, making the ALA the world's largest women's patriotic service organization and one of the nation's most prominent supporters of veterans, military, and their families.
