NEW YORK – Coronavirus and its effects have shown the importance of keeping in touch.  A phone call, a FaceTime session or even a simple note can make a huge difference to someone’s well-being, especially at a time where being socially distant is necessary.

Some of those most impacted by social distancing are those who reside in assisted living and nursing care facilities.  Early on, these facilities put measures in place to protect residents from coronavirus, often completely limiting outside visits. As we enter into the cold-weather season, these parameters are likely to continue indefinitely.

In an effort to lift spirits of these residents, and assist staff of these facilities, the Del-Chen-O Chapter of the Women's Bar Association of the State of New York launched the "1000 Cards Campaign" in an effort to bring moments of joy to the elderly population who reside in nursing homes in Otsego, Chenango and Delaware Counties.

Current chapter officers challenged the board and members to collect greeting cards, holiday cards, and birthday cards and write hand-written notes inside the cards. The goal is to collect 1,000 cards, which will be distributed to the activity directors in nursing homes in the tri-county area. As of mid February, the chapter has collected 350. Activity directors at each nursing home will have an array of greeting cards to pass along to their residents, matching the right card for that resident's situation. Hand written words of encouragement are found in most cards, which are not addressed, and not sealed - leaving it up to the activity director at the nursing home to select the right recipient.

Del-Chen-O is a chapter of the Women's Bar Association of the State of New York, drawing its members from Delaware, Chenango and Otsego Counties, comprised of male and female judges and attorneys. Formed in 2016, the chapter works to improve the status of women in the legal profession, among other things. Members of Del-Chen-O strive to contribute to the tri-county community in a positive way, while providing networking and continuing legal education opportunities to practitioners.

Del-Chen-O awards a scholarship to one or two graduating seniors of the BOCES Law and Government Program and makes financial contributions to local food pantries and larger non-profit organizations in New York. Members of the board provide legal assistance to individuals in the community that cannot afford to hire an attorney. Chapter members also participate in state-wide committees that research and comment on proposed legislative initiatives impacting members and clients and make recommendations to the legislature and governors office as appropriate. Notably, Del-Chen-O members are the voice at the state level for upstate, rural attorneys, representing their unique interests and challenges.

The "1000 Cards Campaign" will continue through spring 2021. If you would like to join in the campaign by collecting cards for donation to local nursing home residents, or contribute in any other way, please send an email to chapter president Susan Lettis at susanlettis@gmail.com.

All types of greeting cards or holiday cards are welcome, as cards will be distributed to residents by the nursing home activity directors, as various holidays and milestones co
