Man sentenced to 8 years for manslaughter over 2019 McDonough death

CHENANGO COUNTY ― A McDonough man who admitted to causing the death of 44-year-old Jesse L. Donlin and attempting to conceal his crimes was sentenced to eight years in prison on Dec. 16 in Chenango County Court.

William D. Sabines Jr., 41, pleaded guilty on Oct. 15 to first-degree manslaughter and concealment of a human corpse in connection with Donlin’s death, which occurred in September 2019.

The sentencing, presided over by Chenango County Judge Frank B. Revoir Jr., includes five years of post-release supervision. Sabines also received a concurrent sentence of one to three years for the concealment charge.

Donlin was reported missing in September 2019, prompting a months-long investigation by the New York State Police. Authorities followed numerous tips before uncovering evidence that led to Sabines' arrest in 2021. The initial indictment, issued in December 2021, charged Sabines with five counts, including second-degree murder.

Prosecutors alleged that Sabines intentionally caused Donlin’s death and went to great lengths to hide his actions. According to the indictment, Sabines burned Donlin’s body in a fire pit on his property, dumped the remains in a well in McDonough, and removed Donlin’s vehicle to prevent discovery.

Sabines’ sentences will run concurrently. He faces eight years of imprisonment followed by five years of supervision after his release.
