Sire Stakes a feature of next week's fair

NORWICH – Harness racing, one of the original aspects of a traditional county fair, is a staple in the line up at the Chenango County Fair.
The New York Sire Stakes (NYSS) race will kick off opening day Aug. 5 as part of the fair’s grandstand entertainment. The race will be held from 1 to 4 p.m., and is free. These are non-pari-mutuel meets, meaning there is no betting, making it a fun, family experience for racing fans of all ages.
The Sire Stakes racing series offers a three-tiered racing program at the state level. Though county level racing is scaled down, racers say the excitement is still there.
Long-time racer Howard Thorton of Norwich says county fairs, like the one at the Chenango Fair, offers family entertainment as well an opportunity for young horses to get a chance on the track.
“They have done very well here,” he said.
The three hours of harness racing will include up to six racers at once and offers up to 15 races throughout the afternoon. In addition to the Chenango race, 22 other counties host similar races this summer.
All of the horses in the Sire Stakes have to be bred in New York to qualify, Fair Board President Mary Weidman said.
Thorton said the agriculture and New York State horse breeding development fund promotes and provides money to administer the Sire Stakes racing program each year. The fund is a public benefit corporation established in 1965 by the Laverne Law. Its mission is to promote agriculture through breeding of standardbred horses and to conduct equine research. Money is also given assist agricultural societies and contribute to the 4-H program.
County fair finals, including all divisions, will be held Sept. 8 at Monticello Raceway.
