From the Big Easy to Norwich
NORWICH – You’d think that after surviving the ravages of Hurricane Katrina, a little upstate New York wintry weather would be a piece of cake. Even so, Irvin Mayfield’s not sure what he’s in for this weekend in Chenango County. Speaking from his native Louisiana on Monday, the founder of the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra reported that “it’s 60 and sunny here right now. I know you people do winter big up there in New York.”
Mayfield will bring his acclaimed jazz ensemble to Norwich Sunday for a 5 p.m. performance at the Chenango County Council of the Arts titled, “Home for the Holidays.”
The New Orleans Jazz Orchestra Inc. was incorporated in December 2002 by founder and artistic director Mayfield, the Grammy nominated, Billboard Award winning trumpeter and composer and the officially appointed “Cultural Ambassador” for the City of New Orleans. The New Orleans Jazz Orchestra (NOJO) is a spirited, swinging, band steeped in the tradition of New Orleans jazz, blues, swing and spirituals. NOJO performs and presents educational programs that draw upon the rich musical and cultural traditions of New Orleans and is the premier major performing and presenting jazz institution based in post-Katrina New Orleans.
“Christmas gives us an excuse to do what we should be doing all year-round,” Mayfield said of Sunday’s holiday-themed show, “developing relationships. Bring someone with you to celebrate the season. There’s nothing like it.”
Sunday’s show has a traditional Christmas theme, Mayfield said, with a New Orleans-style flair. “We do all the great holiday classics, but in the style that only New Orleans can bring.” Mayfield promises that concert-goers will leave Sunday’s performance “knowing what it’s really like to be in New Orleans.” Basically, he explained, audiences shouldn’t expect to just sit in their seats, politely listening to a genteel ensemble. “There is no audience at a NOJO show,” Mayfield said. “Everyone’s part of the show.”
Making his way all the way up from the Big Easy, Mayfield and his fellow performers hope for a good turnout in Norwich this weekend, and tickets are going fast for the Arts Council’s annual holiday show. “It’s really more than just an opportunity to hear quality musicians,” Mayfield said. “It’s about developing relationships. A concert is a great way to communicate with a friend or loved one. You experience it together, talk about it when it’s over and remember it together for a lifetime.”
Tickets for “Home for the Holidays” range in price from $16.50 to $23 with discounts for members of the Council of the Arts and senior citizens. Student tickets (under 18 years of age) are $10. The performance is being presented with support from Kerry BioScience and Wachovia Securities. For reservations, go to www.chenangoarts.org or call 336-ARTS (2787).
