SHERBURNE - Lily Berg has been an integral part of the Sherburne-Earlville girls’ varsity basketball team for many years. This year she achieved a milestone that few athletes see.
Playing in her home tournament on Saturday, December 12, Berg reached the 1,000 point mark, catapulting her into the record books with just a few others. Berg is this week’s athlete of the week not only based on her grand achievement, but because of her all around play this season.
Berg, a senior at Sherburne-Earlville, is having one of the best seasons of her career. Averaging a double double per game with 16 points and 12 rebounds, she is consistantely out playing almost everybody on the court. “Lily’s not just a one denominational player,” said Berg’s coach at S-E Karen Mulligan. “She’s just as good of a player on defense as she is on offense.”
Berg, standing six feet two inches, in an intimidating presence on the court. “Her being six feet definitely helps,” said Mulligan. “But her athleticism is really what does it for her. She’s consistently one of the first girls back on defense and moves great in transition.”
An AAU player, Berg plays and works out constantly in the offseason to help improve her game and plans on playing at the next level.
Off the court Berg is an example for younger athletes as well. Berg is one of the many varsity players who help out the JV team with improving their game and is considered a leader around the school. “On and off the court she is a vocal leader,” Mulligan said. “She leads by example and is getting better and better every year.”
