Sloppy start leads to first Trojan loss

GREENE – The previously undefeated Greene Varsity football team hosted the Owego Indians this past Friday, Sept. 23, in what proved to be a upset loss for the Trojans at home, losing 20-12.
Owego would claim the win, taking full advantage of a slow start jumping up 14-0 early in the first quarter.
Owego's Caleb Marshal would return a blocked punt for the opening score in the game on what was the Trojan opening drive – followed by a Ben Schmidt kick for the extra point.
This slip for the Trojans would quickly be eclipsed with another Indian touchdown by Jyzaih Race from one yard out – followed by a Ben Schmidt kick for the extra point. This touchdown was made possible by a Trojan fumble and turnover.
Already down 14-0, a reeling Greene squad saw senior Coy Austin step up in a huge way for his team. Austin proceeded to find pay-dirt for the first time for the Trojans when he ran a touchdown in from 20 yards out – failed extra point.
Following his touchdown in the first quarter, Austin would snap a pass from the Indians quarterback, Johnson, returning it all the way to the house for a 46 yard interception return touchdown – failed two point conversion pass.
Although sloppy mistakes handed Owego the early lead, previously undefeated Greene, battled their way to 14-12 deficit heading into just the second quarter of play.
Josh Goodrich of Owego would slow the Trojan march, with his nine yard run in the second quarter – failed extra-point.
This last score is where the back and forth action would start and the scoring on both sides ultimately stopped.
“I thought we were very nervous at the start and it hurt us, but we really responded well to the adversity and fought very hard against an opponent that is very big and talented,” said Greene head coach Dave Gorton. “Our coaching staff was very proud of our effort.”
Turnovers for the Trojans would ultimately lead the storyline, as they fumbled twice in the contest, losing one early on. The sloppy play contributed to the final score and loss of 20-12 to the Owego Indians.
In the loss for Greene Coy Austin Luke Erickson led the charge on the ground with his 14 carries for 75 yards and a touchdown. Austin was followed by Luke Erickson with 15 carries for 71 yards, Justin Carman with four carries for 31 yards, Nate Erickson with nine carries for 14 yards, and Mitchell Walters with one carry for six yards; for a team total of 197 yards on the ground. Austin would tack on three passes of his seven completed for 35 yards through the air, while Luke Erickson would catch two for 18 yards, and Nate Erickson catching one for 17 yards.
Owego would run for a 207 yards in the saw a stable of ball carriers get the call. Luke Kiballa led the Indians in rushing with 12 carries for 66 yards, followed by Josh Goodrich with nine carries for 52 yards, Micah Marshall with eight carries for 35 yards, Jyzaiah Race with five carries for 25 yards, Mitchell Card with five carries for 19 yards, Dustin Dann with four carries for 14 yards, and Aaron Johnson with one carry for negative four yards. Johnson would add one pass for six yards and an interception to his stat line.
Greene (3-1) will now play on the road next when they face off against Sidney (2-2) on Friday, Sept. 30, at 7 p.m.
