SMITHVILLE— A woman faced multiple charges after allegedly showing up at a residence located along State Highway 220 in the Town of Smithville and firing numerous shots with a long rifle on August 8.
An individual mowing their lawn at the residence heard the shots and recognized the woman holding the gun, prompting them to flee the scene, reported the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office.
The sheriff’s office charged April Chandler, 49, of Endicott, with fourth-degree criminal possession, two counts of reckless endangerment and second-degree menacing. Chandler was released, with sheriff officials citing New York state's bail reform laws.
Chandler was processed and arraigned on the charges on the evening of August 8, the sheriff’s office reported in a media release. Chandler is also set to appear in the Town of Smithville Court on August 22.
Chenango County Undersheriff Dustin Smietana said the incident is under an ongoing investigation, and more charges may be filed.
On August 8, the sheriff’s office received a 911 call of shots fired at the Smithville residence just before noon.
Smietana said the suspect fired multiple shots, but he is not sure what the shots struck or exactly how many shots were fired. The victim was not injured, he said.
The victim had just stopped mowing their lawn when they heard a popping sound, turned around, saw the woman holding a long rifle and ran to the road, where a passerby helped them get away from the scene, Smietana said.
The suspect and defendant knew each other, the report said, and an order of protection was issued for the victim.
Local, state and county agencies scoured the area for the suspect and found Chandler about a half of a mile from the estate along Stone Quarry Hill Road, Smietana said.
The victim’s property is over 200 acres wide, Smietana said, and is located off of State Highway 220 between Art Lake Road and Stone Quarry Hill Road. The land contains thick, dense vegetation near Genegantslet Creek, he said.
Smietana said the low-lying swamplands, hills and waist-deep rivers made it hard for officials to traverse.
“It was very arduous, this task of combing through the entire area…you drive along the side of the road, and you can’t even see into the woods– that’s how dense everything is,” Smietana said.
In the report, Sheriff Ernest R. Cutting Jr. commended the work of the sheriff’s office communications division for promptly dispatching units and the road patrol division for swiftly responding and containing the area. New York State Police Troop C patrol units and the Endicott Police Department also responded, Smietana said.
The Bureau of Criminal Investigations unit and various K-9 teams supported the investigation, the report said. On August 8, officials searched for elements of evidence until sunset, Smietana said, and K-9 units also returned the next day.
“We will go through no lengths to try to gather the evidence we need for our crimes,” Smietana said.
